Avoid giving anything too personal. A nice gift basket with his/her favorite goodies is always a plus. You also cannot go wrong with a gift card to a favorite bookstore, coffee house, or restraunt.

Food is the safest thing to buy.
Just get something gourmet that your boss wouldn't buy themselves...
Make up a basket...coffee, biscotti, different cookies...
Or buy a premade basket

I would get a funny book, some gourmet chocolates (godiva is really good), wine or something that they would never in a million years buy for themselves

i would get a sophisticated pen, an indoor golf set or you could never go wrong with a neck tie. try searching what interest him and you could go from there.
