I have to say that I'm not going to apologise for something that was outlawed more than 100 years before I was born. I'm not sorry - it's not my fault.

Where does it stop anyway? Do the Italians have to apologise because the Romans enslaved the Greeks? How about all Africans apologising to one another? After all, many slaves were sold to traders by other tribes.

In my opinion, this is just another New Labour legacy of kow-towing to anyone who demands it. I'm not suggesting that slavery was not a terrible thing. I'm just saying that I'm not sorry for it - it wasn't me.

How do other people feel about this?

i found it so ******* insulting, who the hell is he apologising to not to ******* me anyway.

if he had said it and meant it that would be a different thing,

what he should be doing is dealing with the problems that the black community have today and how we are still suffering as a result of slavery - it is called racism, this is because there is still some whites who view themselves as superior to blacks

even though all other races have suffered insome way or another, it was not as bad as what the black race suffered during slavery, over 3million human beings died! do u realise that is more than the population of some countries. imagine if every 3rd person u knew just vanished with no trace.

u have to admit that the white race has treated blacks with so much hate, all based on skin colour, read the papers from approx 20-40 yrs ago watch any available video footage, blacks were set alight in the street- how the hell do u justify setting another human being on fire!!! they were spat at in the street - damm
today i think the racism is even worse, as it has been masked with all this p.c ****

the reason so many whites get defensive when slavery is mentioned is because they would have to look at the abuse their ancestors inflicted on other human beings, hangings, rapes murders and this was all for fun.

the image of the black man has not improved in the present day, we are not all gang bangers and drug smugglers and into ************* hip-hop. when have u heard about the postive side of the black community?

if i am wrong let me know - in the uk can u list about 20 black people used as a positive unfluence in the media, tv, radio who are not cast into the present stereotypical roles(im talking about the 5 main channels)

can u tell me what u whites learn about the black community by watching the tv

what do u think that the young black children are learning about themselves

i can tell you that i learn that whites can be varied, they are cast as both good and bad characters, which is a reflection of society. i can you that l learn that blacks are gangbangers, drug users all wear baggy pants and can dance, im not saying that does not happen at all, but what about the positive roles to balance it out!

so no dont apologise mr blair, just help fix the damage that was created by your ancestors!

Indeed there is nothing for anyone to feel sorry about now. The americans should be apolgiseing as well if the brits are doing it!

But yes i think tony and george should get off those f#cking pedestals and hold hands and say 'sorry' to the iraqi nation and the whole world for getting it all so wrong and not capturing osama bin laden. They should say sorry for killing innocent civilians and NOT having a plan for re-construction after the invasion. And say sorry for letting the country fall into civil war. Also Bush should say sorry for celebrating mission accomplished on board that air craft carrier. Finally g. bush should say sorry to the world for cheating in the election and being wrongfully elected.

Although I feel sorry for a lot of the African American population and the racism that they still have to face, slavery was abolished a long long time ago. Those individuals that are professed to have been racist should apologize, but the topic of slavery might as well not exist anymore in my opinion. Some people just need to get over it! Oh and Blair might as well just fly away with all of the other fairies.

I think some sort of apology is called for after all some of our present large corporations that are contributing to our prosperity were founded on the profits from the slave trade and there is some evidence that one of the reasons for the lack of economic progress in Africa was the removal of between 6 and 9 million of their prime workers at a time when the industrial revolution was just taking off

I feel sorriest for the Chimney Sweep Boys - except those in Mary Poppins, of course! And in 200 years time will New Labour (or whatever it has branded itself then) apologise for the illiterate/street violent/under funded pensioners (among many others) generation that their direct policies have disadvantaged?

It's hogwash. It's way in the past. It's done. I would never apologize for something that A.) has already been corrected long ago and B.) something I'm not responsible for. What's next? Are we going to have to apologise for the Crusades? What rubbish.

Slavery was accepted at the time it happened and things have changed. I get sick and tired of hearing folks go on and on about it.

I sure as heck don't hear the Southern Baptist apolgising for thier view on slavery. That is what caused the split is the southern baptist church wanted to keep slavery.

They have moved on and got over it same as the politicans should

Yeah I don't feel he should apologise for stuff he wasn't even involved in or even alive. It's not as if people had previously assumed he thought the slave trade had been a really good thing.

This is just another example of the disingenuous Blair acting ultra vires. He has no authority to apologise for such things.
