Be polite and respectful to anyone you talk to there.

When the person answers the phone if they say their own name:

"Good afternoon, thank you for calling XYZ company, this is Judy."

then you say:

Hi Judy. My name is Bob...maybe you can help me...I filled out an application there about 3 weeks ago and I want to check and see the status.

If the person answering is on the ball they will immediately offer assistance or say "Hold on, you should talk to Joe (or Mary or whomever."

If they do that, then say somethign like "Wow, thanks Judy. I really appreciate your help!"

Then they'll transfer you or get another person on the line.

If you introduce yourself and say that you filled out and ap and they just sit there then you'll have to say, "Can you tell me the name of the manager who handles hiring and if they are there, may I speak to him/her?

When you finally get the right person, just say, "Hi, my name is Bob Smith and I filled out an application about 3 weeks ago. I am wondering if you know if your store is doing any active hiring and when I might expect a call back for an interview?

Just be polite, keep asking questions, make notes so you know what was said later and keep calling back.

When you call ask to speak to the "Human Resource person". Then when you get them on the line say, " My name is ..... and I'm doing a follow up on an app that I put in with your company 3 weeks ago. Have you had time to review it or would you like me to send you my resume to go along with it."
After the phone call send them (Remember the Human Resource person's name) a Thank you note for the information. It will make an impression. Good Luck!

If it a restaurant make sure you don't call during the rush hours, no one will have time to really talk to you. You might ask the manager to check and see if you application is still on file or if you need to come in and fill out another one. Be sure to say your name a couple of times clear and slowly so it sticks in there head.

Say
"Hello this is ______. I filled out an application a coupld of weeks ago and wanted to follow up with the manager. I am very interested in a position with you and would love to set up an interview...."

It's a great idea to follow up with an employer so that they know you are interested.

You just indicate that you filled in an application approximately 3 weeks ago and wanted to ask if they had reached a decision on hiring?

"I submitted an application 3 weeks ago, and I was calling to check on that status of that. Has the job been filled? If not, do you know when interviews will be done?"

Hi, this is Jeff. I left my application there about 3 weeks ago, and wondered if you had a chance to look at it yet? I'd really like to get together in person and meet you and see if there is a position that is a fit for me.
