I am looking for a way to buff up my hardwood floors, and was wondering if with the right padding, would a car buffer work?

Like some others said, a car buffer will work, and, if you already own one, an economical alternative. However, one big word of caution. DO NOT use car wax. Car wax contains silicones which will cause you a peck of trouble if you every try to re-finish your floors. Most wood finishes will not stick to any silicone, so woodworkers avoid using any car wax on their equipment. I would even recommend against reusing the polishing bonnets that you have used on your car. They will have silicone residue in them which can not be washed out. Use new terry cloth or lambs wool bonnets and use a wood paste wax purchased at your local hardware store and buff away. Beware, it will be slippery. Great for sock feet races!

Buffer For Car

Would you use a tampon to clean a car? Sure, it would work, but it would take you forever. There's no substitute for the right tools.

If you're doing something bigger than a small room, I strongly suggest renting a floor buffer. You can get one at any rental place for about $50. Pads and wax products cost extra, but at least you can do the job knowing that you're doing it right.

Yes you can, Its going to take a while (due to the size difference in the buffer) You may not get the same result, floor buffers are stronger and tend to spin rather than orbit, but in general it will work.

should be the same principle, but make sure you have the right buffer... some rental places rent things like fllor buffers... make sure you get one for hardwood...

Be careful what sort of wax you use, could be dangerously slippery.
