News reports indicate it is the best selling book this year, and every year. Why doesn't it appear on published best-seller lists?

Because it's a backlisted book, meaning it isn't something that just came out, but sells year after year. Backlisted books of any type are not included on best sellers lists. Just relatively new releases.

it may have to do with the time period being examined. while the bible is the best-selling book of all time, it probably wasn't the best selling book last month or last week. also probably has something to do with the fact that it is in the public domain, and best seller lists have more to do with marketing copyrighted material than historical statistics

Just recently it fell to number two all time best seller. It was out sold by the Harry Potter Books. Never before has there been such a phenom.

Could that have anything to do with the fact that it is published by different editors (as there's no copyright on it)? That would mean there are a lot of different editions, and none of them makes the bestsellerlist?

maybe because that number is the total of all versions available. you know that there are as many versions as there are denominations and sects within the christian community.
