Will watching TFC help me learn tagalog?

mayroong ko TFC, TFC subscriber ako ehh. Anyways, I don't always understand all the tagalog words, naintindihan ko maraming magsalita, pero, I cannot catch all of it. I always watch this one telenovela with anne curtis and Sam Milby, Natatawa ako si Sam ksi he is an english speaker and when he speaks in tagalog, it sort of reminds me of myself. It doesn't right, but I think I can speak it without having that american accent, napapraktis ako so hindi naman marinig akong accent. I wish TFC had english captions, cuz that would help tremendously. Nanood ako ng GMA na rin. HAY SUS Mariosep, mahirap naman magintindihan, ang balis naman nakausap. Its hard to catch everything. anyways, does it help if i watch the show and then keep asking for the translation of the words? I sound desparate, cuz i am, i need help talaga. Natatakot ko, when I return back to pinas, I cant speak tagalog yet. wawa naman ako. I want to speak tagalog talaga. and understand everything. I need to bond with my relatives

no, my parents spoke to me in inglish and tagalog, I think most of the time it was english?? EWAN, basta, somehow I didn't pick it up. It's the same with my fil-am friends, they didn't pick up the language like me even though they were rasied in a traditional filipino home. But gusto ko magtuto.

Watching TFC will definitely help you! There are Filipino comics, buy them! or the Filipino magazines! Watch Filipino movies. Rent dvd tapes. There are alot especially in LA area! Or talk to Filipinos you know there in your community!
Try not only listening but also reading, writing and speaking!
My niece was born in the US but knows how to speak in Tagalog because her parents use the language. However I had seen people who are just one year in the US and they are really trying hard! They degrade Filipinos too much! I had a patient who had never been in the US but speaks English well and seems not to talk in Tagalog. I hate those hippocrites!

Well, it will help you learn tagalog. However, you won't thoroughly learn the language just by watching TFC, then again, it all depends on how much you really want it. But since you sound motivated enough, I believe you'll be able to learn enough to survive when you go to Philippines.^^,

I recommend having someone teach it to you though or at least have a friend that knows how to speak the language so he/she can help you with the accents and correct usage of the words.

it seems you know your tagalog well,coz if not you won't be able to write tagalog and bravo for you!I know how it feels living in th US and your parents talked with you in english and tagalog,but since you live in the state you are really bound to learn their language more than the filipino language.Here's a suggestion (oops forgot to tell I'm a filipina,tagalog speaking person),it's really hard to be fluent in tagalog if you keep on speaking in english.If filipino komiks or filipino tabloids are available in your area buy them and read them.I'm sure you will be able to understand most of the words adn be able to understand the context fully and then if you have a filipino friend convince him wo practice with you.When you visit your relatives in the Philippines,tell them to speak with you in tagalog but slowly.Don't worry,they won't laugh at you.I have cousins from US when they visit us we talked to them in tagalog so they can brush up with our language. i know this filipino family, the daughter could not speak tagalog. then they had relatives living with them who barely speaks english, therefore she had no choice. at first it was funny listening to her talk, the accent was hilarious and the grammar to die for. but as the months flew by, she got really good at it. she even lost some of her accent so that if you're looking at her (she really looks pinay) you wouldn't be able to tell that english is her first language. and all this just from the relatives (uncle, aunt and cousin) who doesn't speak english. her parents speak to her in english except when her mother's angry, then she does her tirade in tagalog.

what i would suggest is to speak to people who's english is not good, that way you would be encouraged to speak in tagalog only. tv is okay, but there are terms that are rude and slangy, words that you really shouldn't be learning.

The answer is No. You are watching a TV that is pure entertainment. Some of the language in the TFC actually partly based in the USA. If you really want to learn how to speak, you have to learn to listen, read, write and then start talking. I myself cannot speak my parents dialect, but I can speak Tagalog very well. Well, I came from the Philippines. When I went here to the USA, I have a problem speaking English, because I cannot understand what they were saying, they were talking in slang. It took me years to lessen the accent, reading newspapers, watching news on TV, talking to people and listening to other people. They even think I was raised here, because the accent is not noticeable. My technique of learning this, think how a child learns to speak the language for the first time. You need to work some of the spelling in Tagalog. They will laugh at you when they read that. You need a lot of practicing to do.

Tagalog Translation:

There are many variations of the Tagalog language:
-- there is a pure Tagalog language (riches = kayamanan)
-- there is a Tagalog language, with English words converted to Tagalog (ex. practice = praktis)
-- there is a slang Tagalog words (chedeng = car) (Philippines = pinas, P.I.)
-- there is Tagalog words that have different meaning (Na-type mo na ang report mo sa computer) [computer = typewriter] {you see a lot of people using this kind of Tagalog language variation}

Just talk to another Filipino who is fluent in Tagalog. Try also learning Cebuano, it is more widely spoken than tagalog.

try watching PINOY TV (GMA 7).....they have better tagalog practice than tfc - which uses wrong tagalog sometimes - we call it taglish
