Owners on Crack... You don't waste your number one pick on a DE, PERIOD. Even if he is the next coming of Bruce Smith.
Imagine if they used their noodle, and traded the #1 pick for the Jets two first round picks and picked up D'Brickashaw Ferguson and Nick Mangold. Now that would have made sense. Build the O line, and I am pretty sure they could have also gotten a 2nd round for next year out of the Jets as well.
David Carr's completion % is VERY good for having a swiss chesse O-Line. I question Dominick Davis's durability and pain treshold, but a RB should come after an O-Line is in place. One of the most important factors of how well your QB and RB do is how well your O-Line is. And Houston has had the worst O-Line for three years running....

Apparently everyone in Texas feels the same way you do. I saw a piece on Espn's Pardon the Interruption late last week and they had a guest journalist on the show from Houston. He basically said that the expectation for the showdown between Vince and the TEXANS was going to be a crowded stadium cheering for Vince not necessarily because they love their own son, but because they are so frustrated by the mismanagement of their team. Additionally, the journalist stated that (i wish i could remember his name) the Texans aren't even selling out their new stadium. Now, in a small attempt in defending the Texans, it has happened before that teams with the first pick make errors because they over think the decision. Kind of like in Tommy Boy when Tommy explains his inability to make a sale likening it to ruining his dinner roll. (sorry for the reference if you don't like the work of the late chris farley) Although their pick may turn out to be good, I think it is easy to say he will not develop to the level of the players mentioned in your question. BOO to the Texans management. Plus the fact that the poor guy they picked in front of Young and Bush, will go through life being compared to who he could have been.

I think that part of it may also be that the Texans' management were scared off by stories that broke right before the draft. One story was that Reggie Bush and his parents broke NCAA rules and the other one was that Vince Young scored really low on the Wonderlic test and people thought that meant he was too dumb to be a quarterback in the NFL. It could also be that the Texans are being run like the Bengals were before Marvin Lewis got here. They used to try to get players for as cheap as they could and free agents didn't want to sign with the bengals.

I think they are just in love with david carr
They don't want to take the shine off him (Reggie Bush and Vince Young would do that instantly)
they want him to be the face of the franchise
for the hole history of the franchise nobody has blamed Carr for any thing every thing is someone elses fault
I really don't kno if they can win with Carr

With David Carr and Wali Lundy, who needs Reggie Bush and Vince Young?
I am asking the same question myself. This team though has so many problems that one good player will not make them a contender.

First they have David Carr at QB. So they didn't need Young. Bush on the other hand weather or not they should of took him is a good question. They need a Off-Line before a RB.

The owners wanted to take a crack at getting the fans to stop coming to games once again so they could move this Houston team as well. Who knows maybe you are looking at the future Las Vegas One Armed Bandits

I actually think they were...... Passing on a L.T. caliber player in Bush, and a Vick caliber player with better passing abilities in Young... for a DE who's done what? Yeah I really think they were smoking crack!

All boils down to contracts... they passed on Bush because they couldn't agree to contract terms while Williams was much easier (and cheaper) to deal with.
Young was passed on because they still have Carr (you can ask why later) while management believed Dominick Davis would be healthy enough to return.
