What are the potential problems of electoral college, and the suggested proposals for reform

The electoral college might not be representative of what the majority of Americans think. Twice (well, really once...the recount said Gore won) in history has someone lost the popular vote and won the electoral college (Benjamin Harrison and Bush II). Also, lets say a candidate wins a state by a single vote; they carry the ENTIRE state. One way to reform this would be to make the electoral college proportional to the popular vote in a state. For example, if a state votes 50-50, the electoral votes will be split between the two candidates.

It would require a constitutional amendment to change that.
