Look to see the lead content and the maker. Once you see and use fine crystal it isn't hard to tell from cheap glass. I have both and the crystal is finer, heavier and clearer. The ring tone doesn't really prove anything. The feel is a much better indicator.

The easiest way is to look at the stem and look for a line that runs up the stem if there is one it probably is fake, and if you can check if the glass will sing for you . Moisten you finger with some water and run it along the top . If you get a note it is probably Crystal.

You'll have to trust a reputable dealer unless you want to shatter some pieces and analyze them structurally. Referring to the next entry. I have some glasses (just glass) I bought at Target that have a clean stem and play beautiful notes. They were 4 for 6 bucks.
