Informal sector means those areas of industry or work/employment which are not centrally planned and financed by the government. For example, the construction workers labouring at flyovers, roads or big buildings, agricultural labourers working in fields and farms during sowing and harvesting season, labourers working at road side dhabas or sweet shops or small hotels and restaurants/bars, coolies plying heavy goods on cycle rickshaws and thelas, etc.
In short, these workers are not in a position to form their associations or unions to fight for their minimum dignity due to their extremely scattered location and high degree of mobility. For example, a construction worker may find a job in Bangalore metro construction if the construction of flyovers in Delhi is complete and moves quickly to Bangalore.

Normally the social profile of an informal sector worker is that of the poorest peasant who having lost his job in agriculture and village goes to city to find work. Their life and situation is extremely vulnerable and they are the most oppressed and illtreated section of Indian society. If you try to find them during odd hours they will be found only in dirtiest areas of cities called SLUMS forced to live in the most inhuman conditions. They account for more than half our population, yet they do not have enough economic and political might to make their voices heard and plight known. The sweepers, the toilet cleaners and removers of dead cattles and animals are these people who are hardly treated as fellow Indians. They all mostly come from the poorest strata of peasantry.

The informal sector worker accounts for more than 90 per cent of the total working population of India.
