Hi Simon,

Dioptres are the a number that represents the strength of lens you need to correct your vision to a suitable level. They used to test eyes mainly using the distance chart where u read letters, but now opticians can read the powers of lenses you will need to correct your vision. This suits the increasing trend towards retail style opticians because they want you in and out the door as soon as possible! which isnt a good thing from the patients point. But some opticians still use the old methods of testing eyes, and they try to get a test completed in times that are not realistic. Some opticians use the cheapest possible products and equipment as well. So if you go in an opticians and its buzzing with stress that means they are going to rush the whole thing, and if you go to an opticians where the carpet is thread bare and the place looks tatty consider going somewhere else.

So your better off getting your eyes tested in an opticians with a good reputation. You can check for review online, which i think is a very good idea! Ive given u a few links that could be useful to you, but they are from uk sites, not sure if your from the uk or not.

But im going to have to warn you now, there are some nasty ones out there that will take your money from you and thats about it. I have worked in opticians myself in the past so i know what goes on behind the scenes.

Make sure you check the 'dooyoo.co.uk' site i think youll find the results useful

Good luck!

Sarah

Give me $545,000 and I will teach you to be Optomitrist also. Its basically vooodoo science, with a degree. I betcha %50 of Corrective Lenses are nothing more than 10x Magnifiers that can be bought at any dollar store.
That is some pretty neato math they do though. Diopeter is a Unit of Measurement in Magnification and Wavelength.

First of all they rely on you to tell them what you can see and can't see.Secondly, they can examine your eyes for cataracts, macular degeneration and other physical problems. Using techniques with machines and your input, they can tell what kind of corrective lenses you might need to see better.

A diopter is a measure of focal length. + diopters work like magnifying glasses (converge light) ; - diopters the opposite (spread it out). The 1 divided by the diopter number tells you the focal length in meters. A +2 diopter lens is a convergent lens with a focal length of 1/2 meter.
