It should be legal.

there is no rational explaination as to why civil marriage in this country should not be legalized

OK I had to add some more given some of the unimformed answers above.

Lets start with the ten commandments one...here they are

Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: 5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; 6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments

Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: 10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: 11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

Thou shalt not kill.

Thou shalt not commit adultery

Thou shalt not steal

Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ***, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.

If you will take note. There is no reference in the ten commandments regarding marriage gay or otherwise except to imply that another man's wife is his possession along with his house and slaves

While we are on the the topic of religon, our government is not based on any religion christian or otherwise, therefore whether or not something is considered sinful or wrong, it should have litle or no bearing on the actions of our government. If you will refer back to the commandments. Three are actually laws in this country, Killing, Stealing, and bearing false witness. By the way find a government in this world that doesn't have those laws. None of the rest ofthe ten commandments are laws in this country.

Tax Advantages!! Why not. If I live with a person that I have assumed a mutually supportive financial role such as mortgages etc. Why shouldn't I be allowed to the tax advantages attended to that.

As far as the beastiality reference. Aside from its utter silliness, It couldn't be allowed any way. Marriage is a binding contract. In order to be eligable for marriage one must be of legal age (or have a parent or guardian's consent) of "sound mind" and be able to legally sign a contract. An animal, by definition, cannot sign a contract anymore than they could have a driver's licence

AND YET STILL MORE

Gay sex is an unnatural act. BS! it is no less unnatural than any other sexual act other than male genital insertion into the female genetalia. Kissing, oral sex, and other forms of sex-play do not produce offspring either and therefore by definition are unnatural.

Also the idea of marriage being primarily for the creation of children. If this is the case then when a straight couple marry but have no children, is their marriage invalid?

HIV contraction rate in long-term monogamous couples is almost non-existence. The best defense against HIV, is committed long-term loving relationships.

Because marriage is a religious ritual and shouldn't be dealt with by the government at all. Marriage also shouldn't be a legally binding practice. It is a beautiful ritual that people should participate in if they wish and that should be granted at a church's discretion. Civil unions should be the legally binding contract between two people who love each other and want to spend the rest of their lives together, physically, emotionally and financially. I am not saying in any way that gay marriage should be made illegal. I just believe that the government has no place puting any restrictions on a religious tradition and the beliefs of a religious group.

If you are asking why it isn't legal in America, because there aren't enough people in positions of power who would be effected by the legality or illegality of gay marriage. Namely, gay people. Get some queer people or friends and family of the queer community in congress and you'll see some change start to happen.

Edit: Why are so many people likening gay marriage to getting married to an inanimate object or an animal? We are not talking about someone wanting to marry their dog here, people! We are talking about two mature, concenting adult HUMANS who love each other and want to be bound to one another.

Same sex marriage SHOULD be legal in the United States. It's in the nature of what we stand for as a nation.

The gay marriage fight is really a battle between two groups of religious denominations - Christian and other in both cases. That battle is being missed by the media, and I believe that the battle threatens democracy in America.

One of the reasons for the Revolution, in which ancestors of mine fought -- was to establish freedom of religion in the new nation. Now, we are throwing that away, because contrary to what those on the Right would like you to think, this is not a battle between "people of faith" and "atheists" or some such -- this is a battle between two groups of people of faith, using the government to establish one sides views -- the EXACT THING that the anti-establishmentarian clause of the Constitution is there to prevent.

Of course no one should "make" those whose faiths oppose gay marriage perform such marriages, and no one ever would. So ministers from the Southern Baptists and Assemblies of God and Ultra-Orthodox Jews and Fundamentalist Muslims should never be asked to perform gay marriages, and certainly not forced to.

On the other hand, why should faith groups that support gay marriage -- such as the United Church of Christ, the Unitarian/Universalist Society, the North American Spiritualist Church, Reform Judaism, and the Correllian Tradition of Wicca -- all recognized Churches and 501c3s be barred from practicing their religious faith, which says it is ok to marry same sex couples?

The first group of faith groups is realistically using the government to prevent the second group of faith groups from practicing what they believe. The founders tried to prevent this, for the stability of the country. It doesn't matter that everyone "thinks" they are right and others are wrong -- it matters that we are plural as a society and the government should recognize everyone's ceremonies the same -- which means that gay marriages committed by churches and faith groups that believe in gay marriages, should be honored by the government regardless of what groups that don't like it say.

Everyone's beliefs can be honored, thus preserving the values that my 12 times removed Great Grandfather died for -- but not if we allow one side to legislate away the rights of the other side.

And that's what I think.

Reynolds Jones

There is no logical reason it shouldn't be legal. Only knee-jerk emotional reactions with no intellectual basis.

Not one person holding the position against gay marriage has been able to successfully stand-up to me and debate it with logic and facts; just emotional responses and quoted scripture that has been altered from it's original form by some other homophobe sometime in the past 2,000 years.

So if someone can give me a coherent, logical explanation of how allowing two gay people in love to marry will cause the end of civilization as we know it; a blow-by-blow account of the end of mankind because Robert and Erik got married; the sequence of dominos falling after the first is pushed... I'd like to hear it here.

In actuality it has to be. US law states that we accept other nations laws and we cannot restrict religion - unless it is illegal. Several other nations allow same sex marriages so they would have marriage right here if they moved to the US. Also, several religions accept same sex marriages and unless it becomes illegal nationally they cannot restrict it.

it probably wasn't meant to be that way. Every man and women have different roles to play in a marriage, in parenting and they make a family. Marriage was initially a bond between man and woman who then had children and raised them in a family atmosphere. I think this gay/lesbian thing is all in the mind- when you let your fantasies get the better of you. When you have control over your mind, you go with the flow.

I think most of the against responses here are sick.

Denying another equal rights is always sick. The worst part is they usually use their bible to do so, and their bible doesn't condemn homosexuality. But it does condemn passing judgement on another.
