Write a lot. Learn basic grammar.
Take writing workshops at your local library.
Join a read and critique group.
Study books published by Writer's Digest Books on writing in the field that interests you.
Learn to follow the rules before you take the liberty of breaking them.
Be patient. It takes many writers a dozen years or more before they get anything published.
Don't expect to make money writing. Few people do -- even those who have published a lot.

First, before you even research on how to become a writer, you should make sure its what you want to do. Then, you should write! write! write! Its the only way to go. If you want some books to help you on your way, there are so many to choose from. My own writers library is filled with encyclopedia's on everything from Saints to Serial Killers, Descriptive dictionaries, Thesaurus', you name it, i've probably got it. Do they help me become a better writer? No, but they help me when im stuck and need information. The only way to become a better writer is to keep writing.

One of the best sites I've found for writers help is Writers Digest. The site itself is a host of fabulous tips and other such things and it also features a magazine which is chock full of goodies.

And you musn't forget how important it is to read. Reading everything and anything you can get your hands on is another good way to pick things up here and there.

when you ask how to become a writer, I'm assuming you mean how do you become a paid author, so I'll go with that. There are many pitfalls with writing, from rights, to reprints to other issues that will pop up.

If you want to write professionaly, first and foremost, guard your work with a rabid passion. Don't post it anywhere and everywher as soon as you do, it's reprint and even harder to sell. Seek out midlist authors in your chosen genre and ask their advice, doesn't mean what worked for them will work for you, but it will give you an idea, most authors are willing to help up and comers.

Know your market, whatever that may be, then see what is selling and what isn't. At least at first, you may need to write what is hot to get your foot in the door, before you can write that special something you were meant to write.

above all, don't give up, writing is a tough business and it may be years before you sell a story and get actual money for it, instead of copies and the like. But you will get there, if you are good, plain and simple. Don't sell yourself short, start at the top of the business and work your way down the chain until someone likes what you do. Exposure is nice, but make sure you will actually get exposure and not get lost in the shuffle.

Good luck!

Thomas

There are lots of book to help a writer learn to put their words in a form that will be read by others. I found Writers Digest (books and magazines, writers book club, AND online writers market) first and learned a lot from it. Also found a writers group and my first writers conference.

I highly recommend all, and any others that appeal to you.

But the others (other comments) are right. You need to know first that you are a writer. Don't use how "good" you think your work is, or how rich you think you'll be, but use you NEED to write as the critiria.

I want to become a writer too! What I do, is first write my novel or short story, and then contact a publisher or editor to give me tips or advice. Also, get the ideas from family members about what should be changed in your story. Then, send it to a publisher, and see what happens!

Just write, and write and write. Ask people to read what you write and give you comments on how you write. Ask a publisher to read it and sign a contract with you. And there you are.

You must be able to write if you wish to become a writer. For instance, some 16 years old child write their first book at that age. They didn't went to University to write, they simply wrote line by line, page by page, book by book... :D
