is it safe to use kitchen appliances which have rust on them? (can I get tetnis or whatnot?)
I have a grater with some rust at the bottom.

I don't think you'll get sick, but it will affect the taste of your foods. For example, I used a rusty cake pan once and it made the cake taste metallic and it also gave a rust stain on it! Ewww! So take it from me, it's worth spending the very few dollars it costs to replace it.

Throw them away. Have you seen how cheap this stuff is? Go to Walmart and stock up.
