I was offered a new job last week. Company of about 150 people and I am starting at Junior Management. I am very confident at work but socially very shy. I have been invited to the Xmas Party tomorrow (my first day at work). I really do not want to go (as I am so worried that I won't be able to talk to people and have anything interesting to say!) but I think it will look bad if I don't go! Does anyone have any advice please?

This is so easy, you have answered your own question. You have stated you are in management and VERY CONFIDENT at work so go and treat this like work and ask people what they do,what they like, what they do not like. Just ask questions;; people like to talk about themselves, Also without telling you take it very easy on the spirits

I think you should go, even it you only go for an hour, just showing up will give a good impression and will allow you to get to know more people than you did on your first day.

I once never went to a works party when i started this job and have regreted it.

Socialy it was a bad thing to not go and work wise on meeting important people. So the last one i went to and had a great time and only stayed for a few hours.

Hope things go well for you if you decide to go.

Yes, you should go. It won't be as bad as you think. I'm terribly shy as well. We had our office party last week. It was easier than I thought it was going to be. Most people will start talking about themselves and you won't have to say much.

I was really glad that I went to our party after all. If you don't go, people are going to wonder where you are. They will expect you to be there. Enjoy the time to just relax and get to know everyone. They will be happy to see you there and you'll get a delicious free meal and maybe gifts!

When I got to our party, I made the rounds shook hands & introduced myself to those I didn't know. Especially make a point to speak to the higher ups and their spouses. After dinner & dessert, I thanked the host. I didn't want to be the 1st person to leave but as soon as I saw 3 people walk out the door, I was not too far behind them!

It's just a matter of respect to your boss & co-workers. It's the boss' way of saying thanks. So I would definitely go.

Yeah, tricky one that. The right thing to do would be to go and get to know a few people. Maybe have a relative or someone who can pick you up on standby so that you can make your excuses and call them if you're feeling a bit insecure.

I'd have the same dilemma but give it a try. You never know, it might be a really fun night.

I would have to say definately go. This happened to my mom at her last job, and she didn't go to the Christmas Party. Well, alot of the people at her office were really offended, and they ended up being very indifferent with her for the short time she stayed employed with them. She and I both believe that things could have gone well for her had she attended the party.

I wouldn't go personally, if it was my first day on the job. Christmas parties can get a bit, er, lively sometimes, and it might be intimidating if you haven't even met the people before. On the other hand, if they all get drunk and make a fool of themselves, you might not be so nervous around them afterwards! :)

Just say you already have plans for that evening, if you don't want to go. Don't go just because you feel pressurised to.

If I were you..i'd go..even if it's just for an hour or so. You'll get to meet some new people at your work and they will also probably like the fact that you're new and going to the party..it will make you look friendly and outgoing. just go!!! have fun!

You should definitely go. It will be a great way to meet/socialize with your new coworkers and it will look like you want to be a part of the "team" to management. Just don't drink too much!

Hi You've got to go..Try sticking close to the people you know, don't do anything unless they're all doing it too. Don't be first to offer, stay cool calm. Most of all Look good and keep smiling. Enjoy yersen.
