Taken from microsoft knowledgebase
To convert a FAT partition to NTFS, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
2. At the command prompt, type CONVERT driveletter: /FS:NTFS.

fat32 is an old format developed by Microsoft for MS-DOS. Your hard drive maybe older and hence the fat32 format. Or perhaps it is in Windows ME or 98?
Microsoft have replaced the FAT system with NTSC so as to improve file management.
Here are some links to the different file formats. Hope it helps! :)

I cannot think of a good reason why laptops come with the drives formatted as FAT32. Maybe it's something to do with aftercare support?
Since I have switched to NTFS, I have experienced no problems.
Be aware the often Linux will not be able to write to NTFS. This would be relevent if you decided to dual boot, or use a Linux Live CD to rescue your machine from a failure.
NTFS only works with Windows 2000, XP and above.

NTFS is usually better than Fat32. There are a few cases where NTFS is a bad idea. The first is limited space. For <1GIG space, FAT32 might be useful. The second is cross-OS partitions. For example, Linux access to NTFS isn't exactly ideal.
But otherwise, yes, definitely use NTFS.

You might want to use FAT32 if you are running Windows 95, 98, or ME as well.

would I first maximum impressive you on your record formats, NTSC is the yank television exhibit format, we contained in the united kingdom use pal and the french use SECAM. workstation record formats for abode windows are FAT16 (early variations) FAT32 and NTFS. NTFS is faster and supposedly extra reliable than FAT32 and helps more effective record names. even with the undeniable fact that, there isn't any reason you are able to't partition the stress and format the abode windows section in NTFS and the PS3 section in FAT32 which may enable both machines to get entry to the exterior stress. purely settle on how a lot area you want to allocate to each and each and every device.
