I don't know if this program still airs on HGTV but you can go to "Sewing with Nancy". She tackles anything from simple to the advanced. You can also go to Joanne's, Sears etc and see if they have free classes that they may offer just to bring a new customer in. You can also try calling your local high school to see if they offer a home ec class where you could sit in and pick up a few pointers.
