When I use hot water I get brown water! Sometimes I get black "flecks" with it as well. I have my hot water heater serviced yearly and the guys who do it have no information to offer.

What could be the problem? Should I be calling a plumber?

Try draining your draincock, which is the faucet at the bottom of your hot water tank. Drain quite a bit out, at least until the brown stuff dissapears. You will need a shallow bucket to catch the water .
Good luck

I would indeed call a plumber, but without seeing what you have there, I suspect it is either sediment built up in the tank which can be drained off using the drain valve at the bottom of the tank. Make sure the power is off in case the water level drops below the top element. Another option is that the sacrificial anode rod has been dissolved and the water is attacking the other metal parts in the tank such as elements or internal parts. Replace the rod, and you may be ok, but if it has been a while the tank may be too far gone to consider saving. The last option is that you have high iron & manganese in your water & it needs to be treated, which should be done by a professional. Good luck.

You most likely have an older heater in which it has built up sediment in the bottom, especially if you have a well.
The best remedy is replace the water heater.
The next fix may help for a while, drain the tank using the valve at the bottom.
if the valve is stuck or nothing comes out. It's plummer tme and be ready to replace the heater.

go to the hot water heater. At the bottom there should be a drain valve. Open it and if brown water comes out, let it continue to drain till it runs clear. This should solve the problem. I dont know what your guys are doing every year, but they are not cleaning the sludge out of the bottom of your heater.

here is what u do i had the same problem when i lived in a big city. I called the city water deparment, they will open up the water hydrants and let them run for hours and it will clear it out. Dont do anything costly til u do this first!!! if you still have the problem call them a gain they have ways of testing then if they say its your heater etc. then do it. I highly doubt it, it sounds like the same prob i had.

The water clears up quickly and the flacks go away.
It is rust in your pipes.
The rust could be anywhere between your water meter to your faucet.
Check each faucet will help you find the pipes that are doing it. Did you do any pluming and put in the wring type of pipe?

You should definitely call another plumber than the people you have do it regularly. You could have bad water such as contaminants if you are using a well. Also your water could be mixing with your septic system...which is both bad and discusting.
