This isnt one of my usual daft wind up Qs,but I dont remember being asked if I wanted to join, and I might be in favour if someone told me how it is good for me-on the face of it, its all bureacracy and rights for foreigners,+ cheap labour for companies that take their factories to E. Europe (is that why we get them over here-as a kind of exchange?). I got no right to ask for serious answers after the Qs I've been posting, but one or two would be good!

The first answerer is incorrect to say that Britain benefits from EU grants, when Britain is one of the few net contributors to the EU. This is asking us to be grateful for being given back some of our own money. His point about human rights laws is more sound, but Europe also produces a massive amount of meddlesome legislation micromanaging people's lives. The main benefit l can think of is that you can travel, work and settle in the 24 other member states. But if you choose to stay in Britain, you get a very mixed deal.

The British people were asked in a referendum back in c1972 if they wanted to stay in or come out of the then EEC (European Economic Community) forerunner of the EU (European Union). We voted like lemmings in favour of staying in. I abstained. The vote to stay in was pretty decisive in favour.

I believe it's the only time in our history when parliament has asked the people to vote directly on an issue in a referendum.

I think it may very well be the last time too. I think it scared the politicos witless.

What benefits are there in being in the EU?

None that I can think of. Even when we are forced to carry a national ID card, it will not operate as a passport, as is the case for the citizens of France who carry IDs.

We're just seen as a small island off the mainland of Euro Trash, somewhere in the outter darkness. Our fishing fleets are moored up in port while the Spanish and French fishing fleets have destroyed our cod industry in the North Sea.

Most of the few things we still produce are actually sold in the USA - which remains our major trading partner.

The EU is just a gravy train for the politicans and corrupt officials who screw us for ever higher taxes to spend on their new mansions in the south of France and elsewhere. As far as they're concerned, we can be bled white - they don't care about us. The policians do not listen to the people - DEMOCRACY IN UK IS DEAD!

Well, I am not anything like an expert on the EU, but I do know that we have certainly gained many benefits. For a start, there are many EU grants totalling millions of pounds going to local authorities for projects. There is the European Court of Human Rights, where many British Citizens have had their cases heard when they have been let down by our own justice system. And I do know that Human Rights protection has been incorporated into our planning laws.

Hopefully someone who knows more than me will be able to give some more examples.

While I am not expert on the EU or European politics, economically the EU will allow Europe to compete with the United States, Japan, and new economies like China and India. It may not be the best deal for Britian, but it is a good deal for Europe in general, economically speaking of course.

You can move there to live! Pick the right country and you can drastically reduce the hassles in your life. Kind of reverse emigration - does that make sense? Make it work for you, mate!
