It is not power steering fluid

Usually nothing too dramatic. Most likely a loose / slipping drive belt for the power steering compressor.

When you are not moving, it is MUCH harder to turn the wheel - as a result it takes more power - and the belt slips. when you are moving, it needs a lot less power.

By all means check the fluid levels too while you are at it, but this would not usually cause the sqeualing, it would make the steering feel "lumpy" - or simply VERY heavy.

If you are lucky you might not even need a new belt - just have it tightened a little (either by moving the alternator or a separate tensioner arm). Should be a 5 minute job at the garage if you not handy, a 10 minute job yourself with a few basic tools.

*UPDATE**

The idea of lubricating a slipping belt is NOT a good one, how in creation is lubricating a slipping belt going to make it slip less - all it will do is slip more!!!!

DO NOT oil your belt !

It could be a couple of things, but start with the easiest and cheapest - power steering fluid. The it could be a bad belt, or possibly that your power steering pump is going bad.

Sounds like you need a wheel alignment , along with some power steering fluid.

Your power steering belt is loose or your car is low on power steering fluid.

A squealing noise is usually a loose/stretched belt.

A grinding or grunting sound is low on fluid.

The belt that drives your power steering pump is slipping. Have it tightened or replaced ASAP.

if it is not the fluid it is the belt. you can tighten these yourself, or get a replacement. that is unless you have a very modern car, then its off to the mechanics

Most likely a dry fan belt. Check it and if the inside is very shiny, a slight touch of the oil from the dipstick to the inside will cure it as a temporary measure until you have it replaced.............
