A hen is a female chicken, while a rooster is a male chicken.
Hen can also be used to discern between a female chicken raised for laying eggs or between a chicken raised for meat, the hen being the egg-layer and the meat chicken just called a chicken.

A chicken is a young (baby) hen or c*ck. A hen is an older female (a c*ck is the male). You can't use the 4 letter word for male adult chicken here

I guess nobody out there took poultry science!
Hens are female birds.
Cocks/cockerels (not roosters) are male birds.
Chickens are a specific species of birds.
Pullets are young female chickens (less than 6 weeks old).

The word 'chicken' refers to "a domestic fowl, Gallus domesticus, descended from various jungle fowl of southeastern Asia" OR to "the young of this bird, esp. when less than a year old".
Whereas 'hen' refers to the female birds. Hope this helps!
