In Japan, space is a major issue. So everything is concentrated around a few areas. That's why big cities were built along the coast in the past.

Indeed in the past, the government alowed a few cities to be open to western trading ships. It was a good way to control trades across the country. So thanks to that some cities expended a lot mainly along the coast. And with the coast you have access to fishing.

And now some area inside Japan is dedicated to agriculture. And don't forget than on the main island, you have the Mount Fuji which takes quite some place.

Apart from the cities developing on coasts reason, Japan is a very mountainous country. There just aren't that many viable sites inland to build large cities (Kyoto is a notable exception).

Major cities were traditionally built along the coastline BECAUSE ... that's where they had to build the PORTS in the days before planes!!! People live in ports because they are hubs of commerce, what with all those imported goods, and foreigners..!

That applies to ALL countries with coastlines - the countries with just borders have their ports of entry on the borders for convenience instead! BTW, Japan used to have internal borders too ...! For example, Hakone and Nikko used to be customs entry points, and they are inland...! In fact, Hakone is a flippin' volcano!

It's a series of islands. There's a lot more coastline than there is really inland.

Because that's usually the place where major cities are built? and people usually flock to major cities for many reasons.

Like New York, Los Angeles, Seattle (technically), New Orleans, Marseille, Barcelona, Istanbul, Durban, Sydney.....etc.

Someone brought it up on another thread but seriously WTF is with the thumb downs lately? It makes it look like the last poster is thumbing everyone down. For the record, I never thumbs down anybody even if they answer "Um...I don't know."
