It is important in different ways for different people. Some of us embrace differences in culture, race, religion, etc. Because we love everyone and can respect difference and like to learn and enjoy the company of people who are not "clones". Then there are those who feel that whatever they are is the only "right" way. Be it white supremacists, religious zealots or any kind of bigot or racist. The difference is whether the mind is open or closed. And I will be honest, I think my mind is a little closed. I am an American and think that if someone is going to live here they should speak English. I wonder if they even realize that their refusal to learn English is handicapping their children (sad). I know that if I were to move to another country I would most certainly learn their language as quickly as I could! I would probably even try to learn it before I moved.

Importance Of Cultural Differences

In french you say "I have coldness" in English you say "I am cold" This is a very subtle difference but it is an example. Your 'ok' hand gesture is profane in other cultures. If you marry a person who is aculturated to a different society you have to pay attention to the things you take for granted. These things may completely take you by surprise. Traveling will enlighten you to some of this but you can find it within the US as well. Inner city culture is different than suburan culture. Behaving as a suburanite in the innercity would definately set you apart. How you behave in a certain place is a key to understanding that certain culture. A professional culture is different from a church culture. Different schools have traditions and slang that set them apart as well. If you take that understanding and apply it outward to different countries you can see how cultural differences are important. All you see and do is interpreted through your lens of culture, and those around you have different lenses.

There is a lot of talk now of 'diversity' and how good diversity is. While it does have value, it also can cause trouble. People from diverse backgrounds can come together and blend cultures to great benefit. People do however feel more comfortable around folks who are similar to themselves and may be more productive workers in a comfortable situation.

A lot of people take pride in cultural differences because it gives people a sense of belonging which is key for many people. Being able to identify yourself with a group can give you a sense of strength and empowerment as well.

To understand cultural differences is very important in today's global world. In some cultures it is considered an insult to give back dinnerware or containers that have held food that they have given to you. Now me, I want my stuff back and it better be clean too! See, there are so many differences in what warrants acceptable behavior, what type of expectations people hold, what world view people have...ect. Not only is it great know and understand these differences, but to be able to celebrate them- to have tolerance. It is the key to making the world go 'round.

I prefer cultural indifference. What if I don't need or want someone else's culture. It's so PC to ask a question like that. The obvious PC answer is some drivel about how we all have so much to learn from each other. Then some white lady will be like "Oh, I just love latinos with their cumbia, enchiladas and fiesty women." All of which the white lady would be just as well without. That question is flawed to begin with because it assumes.

you'll know and understand the way others live and why, without you having to question them or misunderstand them. You might even learn something from other cultures, I know I have. There are many people out in the world who do not know/understand other cultures but thats because they have been growing up away from the world and growing into their own.

Part of adulthood is realizing that not everyone is like you or lives like you. Learning of culture allows you to understand yourself better and more accurately appreciate the human condition

It only makes a difference to those who feel they are racially superior than others. I could care less one way or the other. I embrace our differences.
