Managed to hear the complete 1968 cover of Adagio in G Minor this weekend and it blew my mind. I had loved it as background off the American Prayer, but it is just too much by itself.
What other recommendations for such works are out there?

Perhaps you need to get into some virtuoso guitar instrumental stuff like Steve Vai. He;s not your typical shredder like Van Halen or anyof those other guys. Some of his solo stuff is very art rock just like the Doors did back in 68 - 71.
