Once upon a time, a bird that was not quite a chicken laid an egg, and from that egg there hatched a mutant bird that we could call a protochicken. The protochicken (who could have been a protohen or protorooster) mated with another notquiteachicken and the first realchicken was born.
The realchicken's genes were dominant, and before very long they were running around all over the place, cackling and crowing and laying eggs and waking everyone up far too early just as chickens do today.
The next thing you know thousands of years passed and Colonel Sanders and Frank Perdue arrived on the scene and the rest is history, as well as drumsticks, thighs, breasts and wings and the occasional neck, tail and giblet.
This is the way the evolutionary process works.

That's an easy one. In order to have a chicken, you need an egg first. The animal that layed the egg was, in terms of evolution, very nearly a chicken, but still different enough to be classed as something else (the cut off line is entirely arbitrary, of course). It's offspring has a tiny mutation that made it the first 'true' chicken.
