Not certain due to not enough info about your system, however, it appears you are not alone with this specific issue:

From : http://www.avid.com/exchange/forums/thread/70163.aspx

The Avid DVD creator software (Express DV) automatically mutes all of the audio outputs except master volume and wave volume. Unfortunately, this includes the "front" volume in 5.1 speaker configurations. Avid engineers recognize this problem and have been working on a solution to allow users to override the muting of specific outputs.

One possible workaround is to have the SoundMAX applet open (and with the front mute highlighted) when starting up the Avid application. When the front volume control get muted, quickly un-mute it, then return to the Avid application.

This link appears to have a solution ... not certain if it will work for you ...worth a visit :

I would go to device manager in system in control panel and remove the card from system , delete it. The shut down computer remove the card blow out your system with a can of air and blow into the pci slot with some contact cleaner. Reinstall card it should auto detect the card. Might want to be online when reinstalling so it will try to look for new updated drivers automatically. Good luck.

May be :-
-your drivers is corrupted.If then..you need find new/update drivers
{ you can fins whether you drivers corrupted by accesing System Properties>Hardware>Device Manager under audio driver...If there is a YELLOW question mark?..that means driver either corrupted/no driver installed
}

-Plug off your sound card....and then plug in in back....

i would remove the driver for it, then reinstall it back (or roll back if you can) if that doesn't work then remove driver>remove the card>restart>then out it back maybe into a different pci slot. If that does work then there is something else wrong than just the card
