Actually it is the British that call Potato Chips, Crisps. They call French Fries, Chips. They also called cookies biscuits.
What did YOU learn at School. I also hope that you learned at school that a "Yank" is not a generic term for Americans. A Yank is someone from the North.

The only thing I have ever heard called a crisp would be a dessert dish, like an Apple Crisp , or peach Crisp, this is basically a cobbler.
The only thing we call chips are potato chips. Then there are fries, tots and hash browns, all different presentations of the fried potato.

Brit says Chips, Yank says French Fries
Brit says Crisps, Yank says Potato Chips
We don't speak Queen's English any longer... we speak American... because it's America here... in case someone forgot to tell you all about Independence Day and Thanksgiving and all that stuff.
At the rate we're going, Spanish will be our national language soon and then we'll both be out of luck.
Don't even get me started on rubbers and spotted dick...

it's not the Americans who've changed spellings, pronunciations etc. We English have. American spelling on the whole is reasonably phonetic. spelling and grammatical rules are pretty standard, unlike England. Half of the differences can be traced back to the 1700's when we took on the Romance style. putting a 'U' in colour, honour etc. Pronouncing the suffix 'age' hard or soft. No wonder the literacy rates in Britain are dropping.

Chips made by Americans are fatter, often softer and served traditionally with salt and vinegar, preferably with fish or a pie and wrapped in newspaper.
while Chips made by Brits are thin slice of a potato deep fried or baked until crisp ( brittle ) with added salt and seasonings ( mostly made using herbs or spices, artificial additives or mono-sodium glutamate ( { COOH(CH2)2CH(NH2)COONa } ) . Thus , chips are crunchy food that continues to provide its material sensation after a few chews and crisps are crispy food that quickly loses the 'taut' equilibrium of its material. Therefore brits are know to call chips as crisps.
There is little consistency in the English speaking world for names of fried potato slices. For example, in the North of England, fried sliced potatoes are called flakies.
