I have no idea what baseball field you are looking at, most baseball players are in excellent shape, remember these guys play 162 games in a year you can't do that competetively if you're not in shape, however some pitcher's tend to be more out of shape because they only pitch in 30 games a year in the instance of a starting pitcher, however even most pitcher's are in excellent shape, and the muscle mass of a baseball player is absolutely off the charts, and sometime's you may take their wider bodies as fat.

I love Baseball but let's admit it there are alot of players who are overweight.
The majority of whom would be unable to call themselves true athletes as they probably do not have to exert themselves athletically a great deal.
A Hitter only has to train for explosive power and so does not have a requirement to be incredibly thin, if anything the extra weight will give them additional momentum when transfering their weight onto their front foot and so through the ball.
You will often find that Pitchers are slightly less Portly than Hitters this is due the requirements of Pitching throughout the ball game.
I don't think that the clothing they wear is particularly complementary either. Even Manny Ramirez who is regarded as one of the hottest properties in Baseball could not be regarded as slim.

Some wear protective gear but it doesn't make them look fat. Some are great athletes even though they arn't thin like David Ortiz. As long as they can get the job done for the team it doesn't really matter. They workout and are built but they aren't the most slim athetes.

Most are in good shape, but baseball players look fat because of protective gear, somewhat tight uniforms, and the fact that some simply are fat. Most of it is muscle in a lot of players, but first basemen, DHs, and pitchers are fat because their position's don't require much acrobatic, graceful skill.

Its not fat, its actually muscle... or steroids.lol. but unlike football baseball players don't where that much gear on their upper body, it's usually worn on the lower body. I've played baseball for years. And some people who walk on that diamond seem like the most unlikely to do anything but mostly, when that pitch comes they either hit it out of the park or they come close.

baseball look fat because they build the muscles of their body core. In baseball, whether pitching or hitting, power comes from the legs & torso via the hip turn. Thus, muscles in those regions are built up and strengthened and because they are it makes players look really thick through the waist, butt & thigh area giving them the appearance that they are fat.

you're mistaking the fact that they are all pretty big guys in general for fat. most baseball players are in great shape with the exception of a curt schilling or david wells. look at roger clemens legs.....who is 43 years old......they are monstrous and i dont mean fat. i dont know which baseball players you've been watching but you cant play 162 games and be "fat".

yeah there are some fat players, but they are all pitchers, dh, or firstbasemen, the three positions that require the least amount of work. the fat pitchers are power pitchers using their size to get speed and the ball, and the dh and first basemen use their size for power with the bat. otherwise most players are fitter then you think.

Some of it is the body armor they wear to protect them from getting hit by a pitch. A lot of them are in fact just plain fat from sitting on their butts for half the game. Check out the pitchers. Not necessarily the healthiest looking specimens.

The uniforms, especially the pants, are very non-forgiving! The pants are stream-lined from the waist to the foot. So, they make any player appear fat or big due to the naked eye.
