1 pound avoirdupois = 7000 grains
1 pennyweight = 24 grains
20 pennyweights = 1 ounce Troy = unit of gold and silver prices quoted in newspapers.
12 ounces Troy = 1 pound Troy is hardly ever used nowadays.

When bullion dealers are buying scrap gold, they work mostly in pennyweights and grains. For scrap silver, they work in ounces and pennyweights.

1 penny weight = 24 grains = 1.55 gms.
Earlier grade of gold in a host rock was expressed in penny wt. I don't think it is in use now. The grade of gold is now expressed in grams per tonne or in ppb/ppm
