As to how it works on the brain Depression is caused when the brain has too little Serotonin a chemical in the brain responsible for happiness. Why the brain has too little is still open to debate. See second link for more information

Drugs like paxil are SSRI's or Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors, in short they allow the Brain more access to these feel good chemicals. Typically they take about two weeks to begin taking an effect.

I would recommend talking to a doctor and trying some medication if life has become pointless and certainly if you feel suicidal.

Well, it sounds like to me that maybe you do need some sort of anti-depressant. Depression can be passed on by parents, etc. I am not real sure of why some people get it and others don't, but I can tell you this...Taking one Paxil will not help you. Paxil, like any other anti-deprssant is an on-going treatment, it's not a quick fix. I have been on Paxil for years and it works for me but it doesnt always work for everyone and this medicine like any other medicine should only be taken if prescribed by your doctor, there are serious risks if you don't know what you are doing or if you have a medical condition that Paxil could interfere with. Go see your doctor, he/she will help you.

Go and talk for your surgeon; you could additionally desire to learn up approximately the quite a lot of anti depressants. Try the ebook 'Feeling Good' by way of Dr David Burns; you desire the revised version and there's a segment on the again approximately all of the antidepressants.

I tend to think anti-depressant medications are prescribed far too much in our culture.

Some people truly need medication, BUT, I believe that 80% of people that "take" medication would be better served in short term counseling or a support group..

Perhaps your problem is not depression and more attentional issue?

I would A. Recommend you see a psychiatrist and/or clinical psychologist for a good evaluation

Depression comes from either genetic tendency (thanks Mom and Dad) or stressful situations (death of loved one). Paxil, or any other drug, should help with the more severe symptoms. But some drugs work better than others so if the Paxil doesn't work, try another drug. Good luck and feel better soon.

You are better off trusting a medical doctor rather than some bozo on Yahoo Answers.
But hey, who am I to say?

Personally, I think the 'chemical malfunction' thing is a big hoax. There is a bit of an art to positive thinking. Just have some faith that you'll eventually 'get it.'
