The 'cold sore' is caused by the Type1 Herpes simplex virus which usually occurs above the waistline. This is totally different than Type 2 Herpes simplex virus which causes genital herpes. The cold sore is extremely common which is usually the result of the reactivation of a dormant virus which you received during childhood. This initial virus is usually sub clinical, therefore there are no symptoms. This initial virus is usually transmitted via close personal contact (i.e kissing). The reactivation of the disease is due to a weakening of the immune system (i.e a severe cold). Hope that helps!

Cold sores — also called fever blisters — are quite different from canker sores, a condition people sometimes associate them with. Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus, and they're contagious. Canker sores, which aren't contagious, are ulcers that occur in the soft tissues inside your mouth, places where cold sores don't occur.
Cold sores are common. Though you can't cure or prevent cold sores, you can take steps to reduce their frequency and to limit the duration of an occurrence.

It's caused by a form of herpes virus - Herpes virus one I think. You can contact the virus directly - kissing someone with a cold sore, or indirectly - someone with a cold sore scratches it and puts their hand on a grocery cart handle., later you use that cart and put your hand up to your mouth, presto you have now been infected. Or a public water fountain. They are pretty common and can be treated with over the counter medications that shorten the duration or you can get a prescription from your doctor.

Well firstly, a cold sore is one of the forms of herpes. Secondly, herpes is spread via mouth to mouth, mouth to genital and in some cases, by making contact with items someone with herpes has touched (keyboard, toothbrush, doorknobs etc...)

They can come from many places.
Don't freak out if your hubby has one.
My sister in law gets them all the time, and trust me, she's faithful.
Happy Holidays!
