Actually I have four that are very expensive moprhs and one 'normal' male. I was cleaning out the normal's cage about 3 weeks ago and as I was putting one of his rocks back in and I accidentally dropped it...it fell on his tail. Needless to say he wasn't very pleased and decided to drop his tail (like yours has done) about 4 segments from the tip.

It's been three weeks and some days and his tail looks healthy! The best advice I can give you is this:

Do not be alarmed if your gecko will not eat at first since it is most likely very stressed out. Don't TOUCH his tail or try to handle him for at least a week to two weeks as most likely he will still be somewhat stressed and the tail will still be sensitive.

Most importantly: If you're using sand as a substrate get the gecko off of it immediately. Sand is the absolute worst thing for a leopard gecko, especially calcium enriched sand as they will eat the sand and become impacted and could die! Use papertowels for his floor until his tail heals and closes up(somewhere in the 2 week range.) Once it's looking better you can use reptile carpet(very cheap at any petstore that sells reptiles) as it is EXTREMELY durable and easy to clean.

Hope this helps. For future tips you can find me and many many other leopard gecko owner on www.geckoforums.net. Anyone will be willing to help you with any question you may have.

Take care and Good Luck!

A gek's tail is more "fragile" at certain times than at others...usually during a growth phase...sometimes it takes very little for the tail to become detach, so don't worry that you've done something horrible...no it shouldn't get infected, it will however possibly come back in a bit less colorful and possibly odd shaped at first (very skinny tip with fat "bulge" at the new growth site, eg).

Just keep an eye on it...as long as the cage is kept clean, he has water and is fed well...you shouldn't have any problems.

The tail will most likely fall off. It will grow back, but it will not be as colorful nor will it look the same as the original tail.

I don't think it will get infected, it can grow back.
Check the reptile section of your petstore for ointment
keep the substrate clean, and rinse out any debris that are in the cut.
