Hello, ive been a hardcore gamer since the intellivision hehe but anyway...
currently i have an e-machines T2899
http://www.shopping.com/xPF-Desktop-with-AMD-AthlonT-XP-Processor-2800-T2899~r-1~CLT-INTR~RFR-www.google.com

The link has all the info.

So yea obviously its not a gaming computer which the bastard in best buy said it was so yea i know i got ripped off. What im looking to buy is maybe a 1gb RAM card along with a nice PCI Express card. The only problem is that this model only has an AGP slot and the old school PCI slots. So ive done a bit of researching and found that i could buy a motherboard with PCI express capabilities (hopefully something that can handle a Nvidia GeForce 7950 GT).

So my question would be, can i buy any motherboard that has PCI express to replace the current one i have now? or is thier only certain models that i could use with this emachines?

Any recommendations on what i should get to get the best performance is also a big thanks! (new processor etc)

To get anywhere with that PC, you'll pretty much have to scrap it and rebuild it from scratch.

Start with a new motherboard. Look for a LGA775 motherboard with C2D support. The MSI 945 Neo-3F might be a good option.
Then get a new CPU. Core 2 Duo is the way to go right now. I'd consider the E6400 or E6600
Next, you'll need RAM. Get 2GB of PC5400 or PC6400 DDR2 RAM.
You'll also need a new video card. A GeForce 7900GTO would be a good choice to hold you over until the price on the new DX10 capable cards drops.

You might also need a new power supply. If your current one isn't rated for at least 24A on the 12V rails, buy a new one, probably a 600W model from Antec, CoolerMaster, SeaSonic, OCZ, or another good brand.

Ok, the only thing you have to worry about with MB's is the form factor. Everything else will alter around the MB. Remember, the MB is like the central core of the computer. The only other essential thing is the CPU. That is the next point. IF you are aiming to get a MB that your current Processor will work in, you need to find out what socket your current processor is. YOu can usually find that out by looking either at the processor itself or the slot that the processor goes into. Make sure that you buy a MB that is that same slot type, unless you are going to buy a new CPU.

Remember to get a thermal compound to put between your CPU and the cooling fan as you will have to remove those and the compound will need replaced. I would suggest re-installing Windows once you get the new hardware just to be safe. IT is fairly easy, even though it sounds complex. It is just alot of things taht oyu have to look out for.

1) Make sure the MB you get is the same form factor or compatible form factor wih your current one. (ATX or microATX is usually safe.

2) Make sure you get a new MB that matches the Socket type of the old one (unless you are going to buy a new processor)

3) Make sure that the RAM that you have will work on the new MB. Not all RAM works with all MB's. You can get the specs for the new board from the place you are buying the board from.

4) Be VERY VERY careful removing the old MB and installing the new one. Rub your hand on a metal surface before touching anything in the computer to make sure you have no static in your body, which will destroy components.

5) Finally, just follow the instructions for the new MB to be sure you get everything hooked up in the right place.

P.S. for gaming best performance, go with the new 64-bit AMD processors or with a good Dual Core processor. You will not regret it, trust me. It is pricey, but well worth the price.

ok, you can not just upgrade your ram and moving from an amd to intel p4 is not the answer. You can and need to replace your motherboard before you do anything!!!!You need to upgrade everything which means buying ram and upgrades for your motherboard now and changing it later is a waist of money and time. I can tell you a E-machines put very low end motherboards in ther computers thats why they are so cheap. Honestly if i were you i would completly start over. The only thing you are going to be able to keep is the case. Take a look at Gateways (high end ones). Something to know is Gateway makes E-machine, but they make it for low end use NOT gaming!!!!

my suggestion: start over
somthing you can do: you can buy a new motherboard for your emachine but make sure it is compatble

Right.... I think you already know this, but that is most definately NOT a gaming pc, its not even a very good specification of a system.

You want gaming you need 4 things...

A good processor

A good graphics card

A good Motherboard

A chunk of ram

Given your system spec, a PCI-E graphics card slot would require a new motherboards, which may in turn require a new processor and inturn new ram etc etc...

the list is endless...

and if i'm being brutally honest... i think you might be flogging a dead horse with that system...

If i was you... i'd sell it, save up and get a nice little system from Dell, because the money you've spend buying it, and the money you'll spend upgrading will not be far off the cost of a nice little gaming system...
