Good question.
For me, YA has only confirmed my views of "humanity", if there is such a thing. Basically, I am optimistic at a personal level, but I don't think much of the actions of the "masses".
And here I have found people, questions and answers that are gems, though almost hidden by the cheaper rubbish.
A large part of what goes on here is "noise". But among this, the words and actions of a single person can be very significant, whether they provide a good answer to a factual problem, or they help someone to make an important decision with the support of the experience of others.
Since I believe that good things can start with a single person, I think good things can come out of YA.
So I'm not more optimistic than I was before, but I'm not less optimistic either! That's why I'm still participating :-)

Despair. When I read the questions, and the answers I get a feeling of impending doom for the human race.

Despair for sure. I knew racism was still a big issue but seeing the nasty things people say on here is way worse than what I've personally witnessed in real life.

I despair at the views of others a lot, because of all the closed mindedness, hate speech, and intolerance that I've seen here.

When I lived in the U.S., it was in a place that valued intelligence and community. I had heard all of the usual stuff about U.S. Americans being narrow-minded, fanatically hyper-religious, not particularly bothering to use their intelligence, but I didn't believe it.
Y!A has introduced me to a great many people who embody all of those attributes. I have a much better understanding of where these stereotypes come from and it saddens me that there is so much truth in them.

Hmm.
I have to admit that the bashing that goes on here is unsettling.
I have to weed through alot of nasty crap before I find the jewels amongst it.
There are questions here with the level of maturity equal to my 3 yr old and there are questions here which leave me in awe and really make me think about life and humanity.
It's matter of weeding through and choosing well. I try not to answer any question that does not have humor, intelligence or the asker is genuinely in need of helpful or comforting advice.

i think that it has kind of made me happier to see that there are a lot of caring people out there that are willing to give sound advice. of course there are a few morons that say dumb stuff, but they are few and far between. i know that if there is someone struggling with an issue they will find the answer or at least the right direction,

Well, you have to remember that there are many people out there that want to draw a reaction from people. many of these people are just unhappy, so you can't hold it against them when they verbalize sad/angry thoughts. I am happy to see some very wonderful people out there EXPRESSING their hearts. This give me hope, but at the same time my own sadness is hard to hold at bay. In this way, it's hard to walk that fine line between optimism for others and my own pessimism.

I get sort of depressed when I go on Pregnancy and Parenting. The utter stupidity makes you feel like maybe Sex Ed classes aren't working.
