I am a vet assistant. Each clinic is different in what they allow assistants, technicians and "untrained" staff to do. Since there is far less regulation in who is allowed to administer medications, and treatments to animals (most states allow treatment by "lay" people under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian, with registered techs and assistants allowed to do certain procedures without veterinary supervision), it depends on the comfort level of the vet you work with. I personally have done pretty much everything in our clinic short of surgery. The techs and assistants in our office do most of the blood draws, xrays, IV placement, intubating for surgery, administration of medications (injectable, pill and liquid), preparation of vaccines, "triage" of patients, wound/injury/surgery prep, etc... (all under supervision). Again, depending on the clinic and the state you live in, you may be doing all or none of that. Anything you do though, has to be under the supervision of a veterinarian, who should be able to assist you with whatever concerns you have. You will find too, that each clinic will have different procedures and protocols depending on the specialty and training of the veterinarians you are working with. The clinic staff will be able to help you out with pretty much anything you need assistance with. Best of luck with your education.

A typical day in the life of a veterinary assistant includes giving medicines, feeding and bathing animals, cleaning up after them, and assisting with examinations and tests. Vet assistants play a very hands-on role. They take a pet's pulse, temperature and monitor respiration. Some even assist with surgery. Aside from these roles, many also do office work and act as receptionists.

It depends on the clinic you end up working at, and it depends on the state you live in.

There is a technical difference between an assistant and a technician. In some states it is a legal difference.

An assistant would be responsible for restraint, cleaning, prepping rooms, reception work, and some client education.

A technician will draw blood, place IV catheters, perform lab work, provide anesthesia and assist in surgery, perform details, take radiographs, educate clients.

Neither list is comprehensive, but it gives you an idea of the possible difference in responsibilities.

it incredibly is incredibly no longer likely which you will hit upon a place in a veterinary medical institution in need of veterinarian that makes $60K a 12 months. collectively as your advice on the common pay for a veterinary technician looks low, realistically you're nevertheless going to be watching $48K max a 12 months for a veterinary technician. A Certfied Veterinary prepare supervisor would finally end up making that plenty or slightly greater in a super prepare, purchase you're watching spending a important volume on training for that to boot and that they are often unlikely to make greater desirable than a nicely-paid veterinary technician. all of the different positions in a veterinary facility, in need of veterinarian, are going to often be decrease paid than a veterinary technician.
