This has been a great debate. Some would say that it is stealing someone elses internet. But others will say the wireless connection was intentionally left open, unsecure to share the internet connection.

The best thing to do is try to find the owner of the connection and let them either be aware that their wireless network is unsecure, and ask if you can use their internet service. Usually, finding the owner is not feasible, however.

YES. It is called "hacking" and can get you fined and even imprisoned. The person who owns the network has only to check their DHCP log and they will have the name and address of your PC. You can also be charged by their ISP for "theft of services".

Plus, should the person you hack into use their Internet to be something illegal (child porn, soliciting minors, download music, send harassing e-mail, spam, etc), they could turn around and claim YOU were the one who did it. You would have no defense, especially since you are already a "theif" and a "criminal hacker" for being illegally on their network.

As I work in the computer IT business I see it happen regularly. It is not worth risking your freedom, a criminal record, and hundreds of thousands of dollars in fine to get free wifi.

Accessing a wireless network that is not yours is not
advisable .

Is it hacking?? Hacking is using a network to compromise
the datas of somebody PC. So mapping a network and using
an unsecured network to check your own email is not
hacking but it is not ethical!! Using the ressources that you
did not pay is not ethical. I will not recommend it al all

Yep, some guy surfing off my wifi, (I thought I had it locked down but I missed a step, got it locked down now) got arrested for theft of services. He could pay up to $500 and/or year in jail. More likely he'll pay a 50 to 100 buck plus court costs.

He admitted it when the officer questioned him.

Theoretically, yes.
But as long as you don't use it to hack into anyone elses computer, you are OK.
If you own an air port (I do) you will find that a lot of people in the neighborhood will piggy back. That is OK, the only time I get pissed is when it slows things down for me (It is mine, after all)
