An interior wall is usually 4-9/16" thick, if there is plumbing drainage in the will it will be 6-9/16". The exterior wall may vary from 3-1/2" up to 9" depending when the house was built, location of the house, building codes etc. The best way to figure the wall thickness is measure the width of the frame around the door( the door jamb) hope this helps.

4 7/8" - commercial 4 5/8" - residential A 2x4 is 3 5/8" and it depends on what thickness the 2 layers of sheetrock are. In commercial construction they use 5/8" sheetrock and in residential 1/2" sheetrock is typically used. my BF is a carpenter so its pretty accurate :)

1/2" exterior sheathing + 3 1/2" stud + 1/2" interior sheet rock = 4 1/2" for modern construction. This does not include the exterior siding nailed to the exterior sheathing.

In Europe usually typical house wall is 2+ to 3 ft. thick, which makes it a permanent and strong home for many generations. Unlike the US counterparts that are blown off the surface of the ground by any kind of tornado or stronger wind. The US homes usually are built cheap and extremely weak and to make maximum profit for the builder thus are devoid of any soul or spirit within.
