I don't know about free...of course there is always state funding. But as for cheap cheap....Often churches will have baby sales. Especially go to nice areas...I found a $40 back pack diaper back w/ all the extras, pad and bottle cooler for $10. Its was hardly used. Also one of those vibrating bouncy chairs for $5. And play mat w/ all the toys for $5, a bath tub for $1. My mother and I filled up the back of my trunk w/ all sorts of baby stuff and she spent a total of $40. Everything was in excellent condition! I can't wait for the one in the spring...to go get baby clothes, usually on the last day of the sale they'll put some items 1/2 price!!!!! I just washed what I could, wiped what I couldn't down w/ a clorox wipe...good as new.

Also check craigslist.com

Craigslist, freecycle if you're lucky. Those two websites have free things sometimes, in your area. You can also sign up for coupons from all of the diaper websites, and sometimes there is free baby samples. Yard sales are great for super, super cheap baby things too (Salvation Army and Goodwill sometimes have nice things)

I have a two year old and a two month old, and I can tell you from experience--look for people who already have slightly older children than your baby. These people tend to want to get rid of things WITHOUT having to throw them away (I know I always do). Some of us have so much for our children, that the items never get a good use. I have been both on the giving and receiving end of these types of items. The suggestion to join a parenting group was a good one also. So too was the one to have a baby shower (no matter how small).
Please disregard those who are so insensitive as to suggest that deciding to have your child without being financially well off is a STUPID thing. Obviously some of us think that only children of well to do parents are a blessing to this world. Yes it may be a struggle, but at the end of the day you WILL have what you NEED
...Oh--and breastfeed, It will work wonders in more than one way.
Always in Love and Peace

If you are planning on using formula go to the website for that particular brand and register for coupons. Do the same for diapers, but note sometimes the off brands are still cheaper. Also if you income is low consider checking out the local SRS office and seeing if they have a W.I.C. program for Women, Infants and Children. It will help with grocery cost for you and your child for some of the staples.

Yard sales, Yahoo Freecycle groups, Consignment shops....we were on a tight budget with our daughter and we got a ton through all of the above!

Check your local craigslist, freecycle, and try hooking up w/ some local mom clubs. The Mothers of Twins Club in my area has a twice-yearly yard sale, so definitely check that out! Also try secondhand stores like Savers, Goodwill, etc.

welcomeaddition.com free formula from similac plus other things
brightbeginning.com same thing from them
verybestbaby.com
enfimil (spelling) has the free formula pack also you print out the coupon and take it with you to the hospital to redeem
go the the huggies & pampers sites as well they'll send you coupons in the mail.
at the hospital they'll hook you up pretty good with samples and stuff. this sounds cheap but one of the nurses said everytime the baby comes back from the nursery take the diapers and other stuff out and keep it, they'll restock it

well if you live somewhere where people are still having garage sales go to those. sometimes you can find really nice stuff for really cheap! shop all the clearance racks. ask some of your friends if they have anything that they want to sell, maybe you could get some things cheap from them or maybe they will let you borrow some of their items until you are able to get your own.

you can probably go to your local pregnancy testing facilities near you and they do gave out free stuffs. But it just depends on what was donated to them. But it is worth a try without a lot of stresses.
