There's no such thing as "selling' lyrics, or songs, for that matter. What there is, is 'licensing' and being a cowriter on someone's tune. You should hook up with a songwriter - preferably someone who writes music more than lyrics and present yourself as a lyricist. Then, you two would have what is commonly referred to as a "collaboration" where any royalties of the tune get split between you both (sign a split letter at the writing session - right when you finish the song, so there's no problems later if you wrote a huge hit....it could happen!)

a great place to start pitching yourself as a lyricist is right in front of your computer on songwriting forums. join a few like musesmuse.com or soundclick.com's community to find out who's willing to collaborate via the internet with you. it's relatively easy to do.

whatever you do, protect yourself. try and copyright or have some kind of proof that you wrote that particular song at that particular date. alot of people send emails to themselves to prove that. it's not 100% effective, but it's pretty safe. good luck

OH...and let me add a detail: MOST OF THE TIME, the songs that hit on Billboard are collaborations; not written solely by the band or artist like that other guy suggested. just check the charts, there's usually at least 2 writers mentioned in parenthesis, but often many more than 2.

Most of the time bands write the words and music together, but what sort of lyrics are they? What is the song about? Is it short and catchy?
