You need to network the 2...for sharing software and if you're wireless then you need to just make the connection otherwise you'll need to download the ISP disk to get online.

In order to connect the internet to both the laptop and desktop, you have two options. But first, you would need a router. You could either get a regular router or a wireless router. The difference is that a regular you would have to physically plug the laptop into the router whereas a wireless, you could just but a wireless card for the laptop and connect anywhere in the house. After you have that established, you would have to create a network from the main computer enabling more than one computer to connect to the network. If you want to use the same printers and everything, you will have to make sure that all the systems on the computers are the same. I highly recommend using Windows XP Professional. Home edition doesn't network the same and is more of a pain to set-up for use. But when it comes to the internet, you don't need the same system. So here is what you would need listed out:
1. Router (Regular or Wireless)
2. Network Card for laptop
3. Establish a network connection on main PC (Consists of username and password needed to establish connection on laptop, or you could leave open, but then anyone can use it)
4. If using wireless, buy wireless network card
That is the best that I can answer. I hope this helps you out!

Nearly everyone reckons that you need a ruoter to set up a wi-fi network at home...You DONT. If you have a desktop that you can connect to the internet and you only want to use another computer as well then you can build an ad hoc network that doesn't need a router.
Let me try and explain -
Computer "A" is a desk top machine that is connected to the internet either through a broaddand or anologue modem. Computer "B" is a lap top and you want to connect it to the intenet as well.
Fit a wifi card to Compuer "A" - switch on computer "A" and connect to the internet. Fit a wifi card or activate the wifi connection on you lap top.
You will be prompted to (or select) create a small office or home network and follow the prompts...easy peasy and it will save you some dosh!

You need a router. about $40-$50 at Walmat or an electronic store. If your laptop has a wireless card, be sure to get a wirless router.
Hook your cable or DSL modem to the uplink port on the router.
Hook a network cable from any of the additional router ports to your desktop.
Run the Cd that comes with the router and it will set up a network for you.
If your laptop is wireless, go to the control panel and run the wireless network wizard to add it to the network
If it is not wireless, attach a network between it and the router and run the Network wizard to add it to the network

depends. If you have broadband the best way to go is a wireless network. You can go to your local Best Buy and the Geeks there can help you get the right equipment and set it up for you if you want.
You will need a wireless card for your laptop and a router. This also lets you have internet on a line to your desktop.

You can connect your laptop to a pc.But before that u must have a lan card installed in ur pc.If u have a lan card installed than what u can do is,Right click on the "My Network Places Icon" and go to properties. There select TcpIp right click on it and again go to properties. When the page opens select the radio button namely "Obtain ip address automatically." Repeat the similar steps on the "my network places" icon in your laptop also. After that connect your laptop with the pcby using a "cross Cable".If you don't have one u can buy it frm a computer shop. after connecting the two units refresh the laptop and the pc.It ll work.

you will need to be a little more specific, but if you have a broadband internet connection (ex. cable/dsl) then you will need to hook your cable modem up to a router. you will then need cat5(ethernet) cables to run to the desktop and laptop unless the laptop and the router are wireless. Hook the cable modem into the internet port and the laptop and desktop into the lan ports and they should be sharing the internet connection.

can't share software legally, you can either use a straight through ethernet cable (very cheap) and set up wizard to create a small neywork so that you can acccess the internet and share files. or you can buy a router (wifi or not) and hook each to the internet this way
