I am curious to hear answers from Britons. As of late, I have received several snide remarks on Yahoo Answers from people from the UK. Everyone I have ever met from England always seemed very polite and proper (for example: I have some friends that live on the Isle of Man - and they are the sweetest, friendliest, well mannered couple). I have traveled to England 3 times in my life (but the last trip was 20 years ago) - so I am wondering if things have changed. What are your thoughts on this?

Also I read this article that addressed this problem:

Does this seem true to you?

I mean no offense or stereo type in this question. I am speaking from my experience of traveling to England and knowing English people.

I am curious - because it saddens be to think of a culture that is polite and well mannered could be dying.

I live in the southern United States that is known for its friendliness - but in the large cities in the south this seems to be dying also.

I am English and am always conscious of other people's bad manners. Even extending a simple common courtesy like please and thankyou is too much for some people...not just Brits. I have encountered people from many countries across the world and feel unable to generalise about which country has better or worse manners than another. Like in all things, when the minority screw up it is the majority that take the flack.

Well the problem is mainly with the kids. Most people grow out of it once they get into their twenties. I always make an effort to be polite. If I have nothing else I still have my manners. I have seen some negative comments on here directed towards Brits but the only thing I can do is continue to be nice to others and hope they will be nice to me too.

No but I think that Americans have maintained their reputation for both bad manners and arrogance...I have often seen Americans come onto Yanswers and respond very rudely to many of the answers and then get a bee in their bonnet when A British person brings them down a peg or two.

Each time I go abroad i meet so many Americans who are very loud and lacking in decorum...and if you take my frankness as being rude than I'm afraid you may be a little too sensitive for these boards!

I think manners are in peril worldwide, and not just the UK people either. So, to answer your question, not really, as rudeness is epidemic and knows no boundaries or borders.

The British having good manners is nothing more than a myth.

How they aquired it I'll never know. The Brits are vulgar and invasive and have no sense of decorum at all...must be the DOLE generations they are breeding.
