Anonymous proxies work by relaying your packets through intermediate hosts, sometimes more than one, before they reach the final destination.

They are effective, but be aware: ANY of the intermediate relays can view the traffic you are sending. Unless you using an encrypted session, your traffic is in the clear and can be read. A well-known open-source anonymizer (called TOR -- "the onion router") is infamous for spammers operating relays and filtering out email addresses and other private information from relayed traffic. If you use an anonymizing service, be very careful with what you do.
