Leaving the browser open, but just closing the current tab, using the keyboard only, not the mouse. Doing this, when there are currently several tabs open, of course.

Alright, then I've got some sortof freakish software running here, because 'about IE' shows version 6.0.29, and yes, there are tabs.

IE 6 does not have tabs but I would try one of these two:

ctrl+w

alt+F4

I guess you meant to say Internet Explorer 7, because Internet Explorer 6 doesn't support tabbed browsing.
The shortcut in IE7 is CTRL + W. That closes the current tab, leaving the other ones open. Hope it helps.

As IE 6 does not have TABS, there is no key for doing that. Only IE 7 has tabs...

IE6 does not use tabs.

you cant... you can hit "alt F4" but even then you are forced to use the mouse
