there's this little icon on the bottom of my desktop that says "not connected" when i roll my mouse over it. when i click it, a box pops up titled "SQL server service manager". below that are two boxes, one labeled "server", the second "services". there's an option to "refresh services" and start, stop, and pause buttons. I DON'T KNOW WHAT ALL THIS MEANS! what purpose does the SQL server have? if you have any ideas on how i can fix it, i would really appreciate your help!

SQL Server is a relational database used to store information. Microsoft SQL Server is Microsoft's database platform. Sounds like you have SQL Server 7 or SQL Server 2000 installed.

If you click Start > Control Pannel > Administrative Tools > Services you can see if the SQL Server service is running. It will start with MSSQL. If the service is started then SQL is working.

Double click on the SQL Server Service Manager. In the top field type in the name of your server then press the TAB key on the keyboard. This will query the server and find the services. If should now display the same service information that is displayed in the services window that I pointed you to above.

If you don't know if anything is using SQL Server do not install it. It doesn't come installed with much, and if it is being used, and you uninstall it what ever applications are trying to use it will stop working. If you aren't sure why the SQL Server is installed check with your network admin.

Databases are used by most every company to store information. The forums that you are currently reading are storred in a database. Any web site that you can log into has a database with all the usernames and passwords. Any company with a customer service department has a database with all there customer information in it.

If you have the Business Contact Manager which is a part of Microsoft Office you can have this icon next to your clock (called the system tray).

If you don't want to see the icon any more click on Start > Programs (or All Programs) > Startup; then right click on the SQL Server Service Manager. When the popup menu opens click on delete. The next time the machine restarts the SQL Server Service Manager won't start.

SQL Server is a Microsoft offering. It is used to access relational databases. If you are not using it, uninstall it. Did you get the machine new and do you know if anyone else has used it. I thought you had to purchase SQL Server and install it. I have never seen it come preinstalled as it is not really used by everyone.

I had it on my PC at one time, several years ago and removed it after finishing using it. I didn't do a full uninstall, I tried to do it on the quick and got a similar problem. So, my advice would be to uses control panel> add/remove programs and look for MS SQLServer and remove it, if you can find it.

An SQL server is a database. You need to contact technical support of whatever website you are trying to work with (or your domain provider).
