I agree that I think we have gone overboard withn the restrictions given our modern medical knowledge. One glass of wine a month wont produce fetal alcohol syndrome or anything like that. I dont believe you will find any March of Dimes studies that match birth defects with the consumption of 72 ounces of wine over the duration of the pregnancy.
Why take the wine at all you say? The risk is nil or miniscule of any problems. And a more relaxed mother makes a better incubator.
Wanna go down the route that it should be avoided due to it not being the best diet for the fetus? Well, I dont think Chocolate ice cream, pickles and taco bell burritos are any healthier and we in America traditionally support the women's right to binge on these unhealthy foods BECAUSE she is pregnant.
Have a (very) occasional glass of wine with your husband, relax and enjoy the special relationship that created this miracle in the making. Relax.

I agree with Answers99. This is a very personal choice and one not to be taken lightly. I think that our country tends to take things a little to far sometimes. It is OK to eat McDonald's which is filled with chemicals and fat but an occasional, I mean occasional glass, of wine on a full stomach is more harmful then over processed food? Back in the day then did not know any better and we all turned out OK. I am not in anyway justifying binge drinking, hard alcohol, smoking or drug use, but a small glass of wine once a month or so at a special occasion is not going to hurt anyone. If that was the case, everyone is Europe would have FAS. Relax and enjoy your pregnancy. Good luck.

I've heard that like if you attend a wedding it's ok to have a glass of champange or wine...One glass a month seems too much...I know it really should be avoided in early pregnancy (before the 3rd trimester) when the fetus is developing....and then in the 3rd trimester if you choose to drink....be warned that it can cause premature labor...I currently have 29 days until my baby is due...And, the only drink that I have had the whole time is like during the 1st 4 weeks before I even knew I was pregnant....Just be smart and don't drink....You can make it 9 months without drinking...If I can you can...Right now, I will get a buzz if I even smell alcohol...and goes the same for smoking....don't do it...it's only 9 months....that you'd have to give either one up....and it'll save you a lot of $$ in the meantime..

I just wonder why the people who answer this question are so angry at you, you obviously care enough to ask right?? I think the judgmental people that are answering you with anger should be ignored. Ask your Dr. they are the ones who spent countless years in medical school learning about the subject. You'll find that people become experts on babies once they have one or two, don't take their arrogance to heart, best wishes with your pregnancy!!

Studies are showing that even one drink during the whole nine months can cause Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, but my aunt drank a margarita about 3 times while she was pregnant and she has a perfectly normal 15 year old daughter now. If you want to chance it, go for it. I don't.

There is NO established SAFE amount of alcohol for a pregnant woman! Just give it up for now! It's ONLY 40 weeks!! It's sort of like asking yourself "is it safe to stick this nail into my pregnant belly once a month?" SHEESH!!! Do you really think so little of your baby that you'd rather indulge every once in awhile not knowing what it's really doing to your baby??
Talking about drinking during pregnancy isn't taboo...drinking during pregnancy IS, and with GOOD REASON! It's not some Puritanical belief that's only clung to by Americans, it's every pregnant woman w/ a freaking shred of common sense!

I think a little before you find out is not bad, but once you know, you should not want to do anything to harm your baby in anyway at all, no matter how small the chance. They baby has no say so yet, its up to you to make the right choices for him/her so that they have the best life possible.

its an american thing, they always seem so hysterical about everything!!! Im in UK and here the guidelines are 1-2 glasses once or twice a week. Spain and italy they drink on a regular basis, although its probabbly best not to get drunk. I have the odd glass of red wine, the doc says its fine!

It doesn't sound bad to me, but, to be honest, I would prefer to not to take any risk, and having to spend 9 months without any alcohol than a life time carrying the consequences of a baby with problems.

My doctor gave me the okay to drink an occasional glass of wine, but nothing stronger. I got married when I was 3 months pregnant, my doc said go ahead and have a glass of champagne. So its okay as long as its in extreme moderation(no more than a glass). Of course, check with your doctor since each pregnancy is different and each doctor too. I think 1 glass once a month is fine. Just don't drink any liquor.
