it's true, you'll also need a wireless router plugged into your phone line if you don't already have one.
it is the wireless router which sits plugged into the line and holds your internet connection details. when your laptop tries to access the internet it will wirelessly connect to the router which will then connect to the internet and wirelessly send the information back to the notebook computer.
without a wireless access point, the notebook has nothing to wirelessly connect to - 'wireless' routers are a method of removing the wires between the phone line and whichever devices wish to access the internet - it's a substitute for having to have a computer wired into the wall near the phone line.

There are two parts to a wireless network -- a computer (your laptop) and an "access point" -- another wireless device that bridges between the radio connection and the Internet.
One perhaps dumb question: you DO have a regular Internet connection in your home or apartment, don't you? A wireless router will only help you if you already have a regular "wired" connection to the Internet provided by (usually) your cable company or phone company. If so, they will have provided you with a modem of some sort (a cable modem or DSL modem, probably). If you are already connecting to the Internet by plugging directly into such a device, then a wireless ("WiFi") router is exactly what you need, as other answerers have suggesed. The WiFi router will plug into the cable (or DSL) modem, and then you'll be able to connect with the router from your laptop. The setup instructions that come with the router should be pretty easy to follow.

Go to bestbuy.com or compusa.com or tigerdirect or pcclub and look for a wireless router. You may want to get one the is the same as your wireless card. You need to have to router to send the connection to your card. Otherwise you would only have a wired service through ethernet card or usb or cable.

Yes, you need a router. You can get one at Best Buy or Circuit City (probably even Wal-Mart).
I have wireless for my lap top and we had to buy a new router when I got it.

You need a router and a modem, a modem gives 1 wan ip adress, and the router takes that adress and gives it wired or wirelessy to many other computers splitting the ip adress.
