My endocrinologist said he wants me to come in for a vaginal pregnancy scan. I am in my 4th week into pregnancy. Anyone else had this..and what do they do or look for? ( I conceived on clomid if it matters, and I have not seen a regular ob/gyn yet)

WHY WOULD HE WANT TO DO IT THAT EARLY?

It's totally painless. They insert a long probe--kinda looks like a thin long dildo, into your vaginia. It is covered with a condom and has lube on it. They are most likely looking to make sure the pregnancy is implanted in the uterus properly and to see exactly how many embryos there are. Good luck!

It is no big deal. It is just another form of ultrasound. A lot of doctors do that to confirm a due date or check for multiples, which is a huge possibility if you conceived on Clomid. 4 weeks is still a little early though--most of the time no evidence of a pregnancy can be seen until at least 5-6 weeks, even with the transvaginal ultrasound. But don't worry at all--it is routine and painless.

If he/she can not give you a good reason to have one done, then just say NO.

To be a valid medical test it must have a low false-positive and false-negative rate (ie a reasonable chance that the results are right) and there has to be a treatment that will CHANGE THE OUTCOME. If his/her reason for doing this test doesn't pass this test feel free to say no. If the only "treatment" is abortion and you wouldn't do that, say no. (Like screening for Down's Syndrome)

Also, feel free to get a second opinion.

And always remember when it comes to your health and the health of your children the buck stops with YOU! Not the doctor. Doctors work with/for you not the other way around. You are ULTIMATELY the one responsible so you are the one with the final decision making power.

(PS the only treatment for multiples this early in pregnancy is "selective" abortion. So consider whether that is something you would do. I am not saying it is right or wrong. But it is your decision.)

I had 2 of them...nothing at all to worry about. I was on clomid also. Teh transvaginal scan is more accurate. Because you were on clomid they will be looking for a multiple pregnancy and to make sure that the fetus is in the right spot. At 4 weeks its the opnly way to see someting. All it is is a probe. Maybe a little bigger around than your finger. Tehy put a condom on it and insert it up into your vagina...they look at your uterus through your cervix. Nothing at all to worry about...good luck!1

I had transvaginal scans throughout my fertility treatments so I'm assuming you've had them before. But during early pregnancy its the only way to see where the egg sac has attached itself, where the placenta is developing, how much fluid is in the sac, the shape and position of the uterus. Atleast thats what they checked on me. Its also important check to see how many embryos and if any are developing in the tube due to conception because of fertility drugs.

7 plus means u could be 7weeks plus 1 day, 2days, and so on. Im not sure why the didnt give you a date as when I was pregnant, my scan was at 8weeks and 5days, and they gave me my due date. Try and work it out. But even with a due date, babies are born a couple of weeks either side anyway. I would prefer not to have a 'due date' as going past my due date was like christmas with no presents or family etc. Congratulations and dont worry about the notes i always read mine and since working at the labour suite i realise how many things i got wrong. If they thought your baby was at risk, they would have told you. x

Yep, it's just an internal ultrasound. The Dr. has a wand - kinda like a dildo - but they don't put it in too deeply. they're able to get a good view of a very small fetus much better this way. It's not nearly as uncomfortable as your annual exam. Don't worry! You'll get some good pics of the baby and maybe get to see/hear the heartbeat. It's awesome!

I had several done at my RE...at the 4th week they are looking at your ovaries and such (there wont be anything baby wise to see). At 5 weeks you should be able to see the fetal pole and sac. In the 6th week the heartbeat.
I have pics of my scans if you want to see them, from 5 weeks up to 9 from the transvag (aka the cooter wand) ultrasounds.

I have had one. At that early stage they will probaby only see the yolk sac. they also llok at your ovaries to make sure all is well and there is no ectopic pregnancy. Don't worry sweetie its totally painless, although it looks hideous, and will put your mind at ease that everything is ok. good luck

I had mine early becos I was getting cramps and they like to check everything is ok. im sure u will be fine stop worrying, u are gonna get the first glimpse of your baby!!! Good luck

its is just where they put a scanner up there and can see the baby and make sure everything is going ok. They say is no bigger than a penis, but sometimes it has some pressure, but nothing to be scared about. Best of luck to you and your little baby.
