Being an introvert is not about being shy at all. I am a perfect example of this. Most people perceive me as being an extrovert because when I am around people I am very open and outgoing and involved, however, I can't wait to get back home and into my shell where no one bugs me, or asks me anything or wants anything of me. And I basically live from the inside, out. People, unless they are very sensitive and compassionate, are annoying to me with their small talk and judgments, etc. So, yes, I definitely relate to the need for lots of alone time to recharge.

Acting shy or acting outgoing are just social skills that anyone can learn. Being extroverted & introverted are actually how you "recharge your batteries."

Does being around a lot of people for a long time make you tired or anxious? Or does it make you feel good, and give you more energy? If the former, you're introverted. If the latter, then you're extroverted.

Conversely, if being alone helps you "rest up" for the next time you've got to be in a social situation, then you're introverted. But if it drives you stark raving mad, and you just can't stand the quiet any more, then you're extroverted.

The answer I like is this: An extrovert is energized around people and an introvert feels drained by people. So, if you go to a party and you are an extrovert, you feel like going to an after-party afterwards. If you're an introvert, you just want to go home and be away from people afterwards.

I'm not an expert, but I think one short answer is that extroverts recharge around people and introverts recharge by being alone.

The Meyers-Briggs test, which measures introversion/extroversion among other characteristics, might give you a much more ample definition:

The extrovert is more opened to people, not afraid to show emotions, to talk in front of people to make new friends.
Etymologically extra is outside and intro- inside, while overt in french is opened.
