This is a list of metropolitan counties, non-metropolitan counties and unitary authorities of England by population.

It includes those non-metropolitan counties (also known as shire counties) with a two-tier county council structure, metropolitan counties and unitary authorities.

In cases where a unitary authority has been detached from a county the population of the unitary authority is shown separately. For example, Luton is shown separately from the population figure for Bedfordshire.

Hell, had a couple of good answers there, didn't you = but why on earth would we want our kids to do what American Kids do?

Could you have named all the Counties in England - and could you have named all the US States?

I could have done both the Counties and the State - but how will you ever know if I am not telling the truth?

So you can name all the counties in America?
That's impressive given that there's upwards of 200 per state.

Naming all the counties in the UK is not an easy matter given that local governments regularly form new unitary authorities, (which qualify as county conurbations).

Currently, yes, I can name all the counties of mainland UK.

I thank you.

Yes I can. I can also tell you where they are, and probably name the county towns, although that would take longer. Even though there are only 36 counties currently, there are also royal boroughs, unitary authorities and other traditional areas which make it quite an arduous task.

Gosh no! I would imagine that most American kids can't name all the states. I can because I taught it for 6 years and I used to write them during really boring graduate classes.

Yes most of them... I cant believe people went to the lengths of typing them all in though!

As for all the smartypants Yanks, can you name all the towns/cities in America named after UK places?

New YORK, Manchester, Birmingham, Cleveland....

of course american schoolchildren can name all the states, its drummed into them constantly for the first 15 years of their life, just after flag waving class and before "I pledge allegiance...." class, then its off to mcfattys for a supersize lunch.
the fact that over 90% of americans dont even own a passport shows how important world geography is to them..
