You can't go wrong with a gift certificate. A promise ring is WAY too soon and you might scare the guy off. Let him buy you one when the timing is right.

listen to what he is saying for a couple of days. Maybe u will hear him or have heard him complain about something being old or something he wishes he could have that is in a reasonable price range. If you get nothing guys usually like watches right?

you could probably get him a Cologne or jewelry, probably a chain or an ID band with his name on it. And a love letter at the side of whatever you give him would add a special personal touch to it. hope you figure it out.
